Alright, let’s get started with Activity 1: Practicing Individual Words. I’ll say a word, and I want you to repeat after me. Take your time and really focus on that /ɑ:/ sound. Ready? Let’s go!
Activity 1: Word Practice
Car: carro, automóvel
Start: começar, iniciar
Park: parque, estacionar
Heart: coração, centro
Dark: escuro, sombrio
Hard: difícil, duro
Farm: fazenda, cultivar
Star: estrela, astro
Bark: latir, casca
Art: arte, habilidade
These are some of the most commonly used words in English with the ɑ: sound! Great job! Keep practicing those words to get more comfortable with the ɑ: sound. Now, let’s move on to Activity 2: Using These Words in Sentences. I’ll say each sentence twice. The first time, just listen. The second time, repeat after me. Ready? Here we go!
Activity 2: Sentence Practice
I parked the car near the entrance. | Eu estacionei o carro perto da entrada.
She loves to start her day with a run. | Ela adora começar o dia com uma corrida.
We walked through the park at sunset. | Nós caminhamos pelo parque ao pôr do sol.
His heart was racing with excitement. | Seu coração estava acelerado de excitação.
It’s hard to see in the dark. | É difícil enxergar no escuro.
The farm is far from the city. | A fazenda é longe da cidade.
The star shone brightly in the night sky. | A estrela brilhava intensamente no céu noturno.
The dog’s bark woke me up. | O latido do cachorro me acordou.
She studied art in college. | Ela estudou arte na faculdade.
Keep practicing these sentences, and you’ll notice how much more natural the ɑ: sound becomes.
